Buzzing through to the National Final at the Foreign Language Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee On Thursday 3rd May, Mr Small and Ms Viazzani accompanied Aziza Khan (7U), Temdiayo Ogundamisi (7Y) and Ahnaaf Islam (7L) to the London Regional Foreign Languages Spelling Bee Final at Coopers’ Company and Coborn school in East London.  The Spelling Bee is a competition for students in Year 7 to practise and improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French, German or Spanish). In each round, they have one minute to translate as many words as possible from English and spell them in the target language. Temidayo (French) and Ahnaaf (Spanish) reached the quarter final round whilst Aziza (French) qualified for the semi-final after a nail biting sudden death tiebreak in the quarter final. In the semi-final round, Aziza spelt an incredible 26 words in one minute and reached the final where she tied for first place. In the end, she was awarded the second prize out of 6,591 initial competitors after a nerve wracking sudden death tiebreak against the eventual winner, Jay Mahan from Ibstock Place School in South-West London. Having beaten students from London's top private schools, Aziza will now represent Woodside in the National Foreign Languages Spelling Bee Final at Cambridge University in June. This is an outstanding achievement by all three of our students.
