Sir Ian McKellen visits Woodside High!

This week we were absolutely thrilled to be visited by Sir Ian McKellen, award winning actor, campaigner and founder of Stonewall, to celebration Woodside High School winning the prestigious Stonewall School Champion Gold award.

As many of us know, Woodside has become the first secondary school in London to win the Gold award and is only the fourth secondary school to ever win the award, which gives greater recognition to schools tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and celebrating diversity. Sir Ian gave a talk to an audience of over 250 people, made up of Student Council members from Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, as well as all of Year 10, the Equality Group and staff. It was an absolute honour to hear his speech; Sir Ian spoke movingly about the campaign work he has done over the years and the importance and value of working to ensure equality for all. Everyone found his speech incredibly inspiring and we were all thrilled when he ended his talk with the important advice – delivered as Gandalf himself, “if you do not revise for your exams, YOU SHALL NOT PASS!”. Sir Ian also met with the Equality Group where he discussed their plans for the future and ongoing work. It was a real privilege to host a visit from Sir Ian and an experience that students and staff will never forget.
